Vet Tech Cafe - Lorelei D’Avolio Episode
Sunday Feb 20, 2022
Sunday Feb 20, 2022
Hey Caffeinators, have you ever wondered how the veterinary technician specialty academies are formed? Are you interested in becoming a VTS at some point? Have you considered what it looks like to START a new academy? Well, then don't miss this episode with Lorelei D'Avolio, LVT, VTS (CP-Exotic Companion Animal), CVPM! This was a fascinating discussion about the formation of academies, as she's a founding member of the AVTCP and the current Chair of the CVTS (Committee of Veterinary Technician Specialties). This committee is responsible for overseeing current academies and reviewing proposals for aspiring academies. We've spent several episodes highlighting many of the VTS academies currently in existence (with more on the way-SPOILER ALERT!) but it was great to have a discussion about how those academies are formed and maintained, and also just hear all the amazing things Lorelei has done in her career and still continues to be motivated to do! She works in New York City's ONLY stand-alone exotics practice-we cover that too! We think you'll enjoy this one!

Vet Tech Cafe - Rachelle Pastorkovich Episode
Sunday Feb 06, 2022
Sunday Feb 06, 2022
This was a special episode for Jeff. Rachelle Pastorkovich, RVT, was a former student of his when he was an adjunct professor at what was then Professional Veterinary Assistant School. Rachelle graduated from that tech school in 2011 and has worked in general and specialty practice. To pursue her love of wildlife, she volunteered for local wildlife organizations and also worked for a local veterinarian who did a lot of work for local zoos and wildlife and bird of prey rehabilitation. From there, she pivoted and began working at Sea World as an RVT in 2018, and is set to start a new role at the Safari Animal Park in early 2022. In this episode we discuss her path and work at Sea World, and what it looks like to work in marine mammal medicine. We examine developing the skills needed for working with those species as they're not animals commonly discussed or taught in veterinary technician school. This led to some fascinating discussion comparing and contrasting skills and anatomy of different species. We think you'll enjoy this one-we sure did!

Vet Tech Cafe - Garnetta Santiago Episode
Sunday Jan 23, 2022
Sunday Jan 23, 2022
Hello Caffeinators, we hope you're well! We're bringing you our next episode with Garnetta Santiago, MA, LVT to talk about diversity, equity, and inclusion in our field. If you heard our recent episode with Harold Davis (if not, why not? Download it now!), Garnetta was his recommendation for who we should interview next. Garnetta is currently the Manager of Academic and Professional Affairs for Zoetis, driving strategic engagement with Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Technology programs throughout the US and Caribbean. She talked to us about her work and some of the different programs that are available for DEI training. We discussed the larger scope of where we're at currently on these issues, where we've come from, and areas where we can continue to improve. Many of the points she makes really made us think and it was wonderful to continue this conversation we started in 2020. We could've talked to Garnetta for hours, and we hope this was just the first episode with her so we can dive deeper into some of these points soon!

Vet Tech Taproom Episode 17
Sunday Jan 16, 2022
Sunday Jan 16, 2022
In this episode of the Vet Tech Taproom, Dave and Jeff discuss the article we posted on our social media regarding the AVMA's discussion on the idea of letting non-veterinarians into their organization. We posted this article earlier this week and it got a lot of response from our Caffeinators. We have our opinions on what was discussed and we're sure you have yours. We encourage you to comment on this and continue the discussion!

Vet Tech Cafe - Teri Kleist Episode
Sunday Jan 09, 2022
Sunday Jan 09, 2022
Happy New Year, Caffeinators! There are episodes of the Vet Tech Cafe that we plan and plan and plan, and there are those that just come together and the conversation flows better than we could've imagined. Our next episode with Teri Kleist, CVT, VTS(Surgery) is more the latter. We "met" Teri two days before we recorded but the conversation was as though we'd known her the duration of our careers! As we aim to spotlight all of the VTS academies, we finally got to talk to Teri with an assist from Heidi Reuss-Lamky. Teri is a past President of NAVTA, has done all sorts of committee and organizational work in our field, but she's also a charter member of the AVST and that's where we focused our discussion. After 40 years, she retired from clinical practice in late 2021, but is still very active. We learned about the formation of AVST, the application process, and what a surgical technician does and we found it all very eye-opening. We know it's cold outside, but it's comfortable in here, we have lots of beverages to warm you up, so let us pour you something great and bring you into the discussion. We think you'll like this one!

Vet Tech Cafe - Sam Geiling Episode
Sunday Dec 26, 2021
Sunday Dec 26, 2021
Mele Kalikimaka, Caffeinators! We hope you're having a wonderful holiday season. We're really excited to bring you our next episode with Sam Geiling, RVT. Sam has accomplished some pretty incredible things in the veterinary technician profession in Hawaii. Since moving there several years ago, she has created the only AVMA-accredited technician program in the state and still teaches there. Additionally, she created, and still works with, the Hawaiian Veterinary Technician Association, HVTA. We chatted with her recently about those endeavors, and also about her current project she's working on getting off the ground called Vet Med Masterminds. She hopes this group will be a means to help bring ideas into action and create meaningful change in the veterinary technician space. You can check out the website and join the Facebook group at the links below, and for our Hawaii Caffeinators, you can click below to visit the HVTA page to become a member today! Aloha!

Vet Tech Taproom Episode 16
Sunday Dec 19, 2021
Sunday Dec 19, 2021
In this episode of the Vet Tech Taproom we discuss the American Association of Critical Care Nurses standards for healthy work environments. These are human nurses that came up with this set of standards, but they are very relatable to the veterinary field.

Vet Tech Cafe - Harold Davis Episode
Sunday Dec 12, 2021
Sunday Dec 12, 2021
Our guest today is someone who could be considered a pioneer for many of us in the industry.
Harold Davis, Jr., RVT, VTS (ECC) (Anesth/Analgesia) sat down with us not too long ago and chatted about the development of the first VTS academies for ECC and Anesthesia. He was a charter member for both, and we took a deep dive into the formation of these academies. We wanted to know what the process looked like when there were no Facebook groups in which to communicate, how the process has evolved over the years, and we also wanted to know what the level of support or backlash was. As you can imagine, there was a bit of both. There are a lot of great stories in this one, but also a little bit of a "by looking back, how can we move forward?" flavor as well. Harold is now retired but continues to advocate and champion the profession in many ways. He still actively serves on various boards and committees serving the veterinary industry. This one is not to be missed-we hope you enjoy it!

Vet Tech Cafe - Nicole Dickerson Episode
Sunday Nov 28, 2021
Sunday Nov 28, 2021
Nicole Dickerson has been working in the Bay Area as a registered veterinary technician for the last 11 years. Before then, she worked as a free-lance Equity stage manager for theatres such as Berkeley Repertory Theatre, American Conservatory Theatre, California Shakespeare Theatre, and Teatro Zinzanni. After working with cats and dogs in emergency and specialty hospitals for the majority of her career, Nicole recently transitioned into laboratory animal medicine, and now supervises a veterinary technician team through work with multiple species. She serves on the CVMA’s House of Delegates and RVT Committee, has been published in the NAVTA journal, hosts the podcast "Cat Disgusted," and is honored to have traveled to Puerto Rico as a volunteer anesthetist for the Humane Society of the United States’ Spayathon for PR.
We spent some time chatting with Nicole this week about how theater and veterinary medicine parallel. Wondering how that could possibly be?? Give a listen.

Vet Tech Cafe - Jordan and Yvonne, IMFVT
Sunday Nov 14, 2021
Sunday Nov 14, 2021
If you listen to the Vet Tech Cafe podcast, there's a good chance you listen to other veterinary podcasts. If you haven't listened to Internal Medicine for Vet Techs with Jordan Porter, RVT, LVT, VTS(SAIM) and Yvonne Brandenburg, RVT, VTS(SAIM), you should start. Each week, they put out a new episode discussing myriad diseases in the small animal internal medicine world. They interject some great humor and many take home points and concepts for the patients we treat everyday. They've built an incredible online community of fellow med-heads, and after starting their podcast right around the same time we did, we finally got to have them come to the cafe for a cup of coffee and discussion of all things IMFVT. If you're unfamiliar, check out the links below; or better yet, download their podcast on any major podcast platform today! You definitely won't regret it. We've long referred to them as our podcast sisters because we started at the same time and found each other during the development phase of our podcasts and shared ideas and collaborated several different times. This week, we got to shine the spotlight on them and we couldn't be more proud to call them friends and colleagues, or be more proud of what they've built.
If you listen to the episode, Jordan and Yvonne have given our listeners a discount code for their membership services!
