Vet Tech Cafe - Alexandra Yaksich Episode
Sunday Sep 19, 2021
Sunday Sep 19, 2021
For most of our episodes for the Vet Tech Cafe, we reach out to a specific guest to discuss a certain issue in our field, or highlight a particular area of it. For other episodes, a guest might reach out to us, and the conversation grows more organically. That's exactly what happened for our latest episode with Alexandra Yaksich, BSc, AHT. Alex reached out to us recently to let us know she wanted to mention our podcast in an upcoming article she was writing for Veterinary Practice News about compassion fatigue. Naturally, we wanted to know more about this, and discovered a large portion of her career currently is writing about trends in the veterinary industry. Additionally, she is leading a campaign in her native Quebec to ban declawing in cats! This is exactly what we strive to highlight on the Vet Tech Cafe-veterinary technicians who are driving and leading change in our field. We really hope you'll join us for this fascinating discussion! Some of Alex's other recent articles are linked below. She also has a professional relationship with Euthabag, a purpose-built body bag as an alternative to a standard plastic trash bag. You can find out more about them below!

Vet Tech Cafe - Nynke Hillebrand Episode
Sunday Sep 05, 2021
Sunday Sep 05, 2021
To continue our International Series, we invited Nynke Hillebrand, RVT, stateside recently, albeit virtually, to discuss life as a veterinary technician in The Netherlands! We met Nynke in 2013 when the three of us tested for the AVECCTN exam. Nynke came to San Diego, CA, all the way from The Netherlands for that exam. Without giving too much away here, there are far more similarities than differences, and we believe hearing about all of that will be as fascinating to you as it was to us! Spoiler alert, many of the same challenges we face in the US are also challenges faced there. Additionally, Nynke has transitioned out of a clinical role after experiencing burnout, and now is a certified systemic therapist and works with veterinarians and veterinary staff. What is systemic therapy and what does that look like? Download Sunday night at 8pm wherever you get your podcasts!

Vet Tech Cafe - Ken Yagi Episode
Sunday Aug 22, 2021
Sunday Aug 22, 2021
There are not many people in our field that are working as hard as Ken Yagi is to change it. To know Ken is to know how many Boards and Committees he serves on, how much work he puts in every day to try to make things better, and what it looks like to be the Chief Veterinary Nursing Officer for Veterinary Emergency Group, or VEG. That last point is where we spend the bulk of our time in this episode. Ken Yagi, MS, RVT, VTS (ECC) (SAIM), recently sat down with us to discuss his role inside VEG, the incredible talent that they have acquired, future expansion plans, and much more. You may have seen posts online recently about the higher wages and benefits VEG offers to veterinary technicians, and we wanted to know what they're putting in the water (or coffee) at VEG and whether or not this is sustainable. They believe it is and our profession will be better for it. We could talk to Ken for hours about so many different things, but with the current job market, we felt this was a good first step. Grab a cup of coffee and join the discussion!

Vet Tech Cafe - Mary Berg Episode-Beyond the Crown-Dentistry
Sunday Aug 08, 2021
Sunday Aug 08, 2021
Happy Sunday, Caffeinators! We recently shared a conversation and a cup of coffee with Mary Berg, BS, RVT, LATG, VTS(Dentistry), to talk all things veterinary dentistry. This hour flew by listening to Mary talk about how veterinary dentistry has changed over the years, what it looks like to be practice as a VTS(Dentistry), and the pathway to obtain that. We could've talked to Mary for hours as she wears so many different hats in our profession, but for this discussion, we tried to keep it narrowed down to veterinary dentistry. If you need any dentistry consulting, be sure to check out the link for Beyond the Crown below. We hope you enjoy this one-we certainly did!

Vet Tech Cafe - Nicki Castagna Episode
Sunday Jul 25, 2021
Sunday Jul 25, 2021
Caffeinators, this is an important one. Are you a member of your state veterinary technician association, or VTA? Or perhaps the State VMA if a VTA doesn't exist? Are you active and engaged in what the association is doing? We can't stress strongly enough the important work these Board and Committee members do, strictly on a volunteer basis, to make sure your profession is well represented in the legislative arena. We recently sat down with Nicki Castagna, RVT, who is the President of the Maryland VTA to talk about the importance of these associations, and moreover, your membership. The more members an association has, the larger contingent it represents, and the greater likelihood it can effect change. We hope after you hear this episode, you'll join your local VTA if you haven't already! And while you're at it, join a committee and get involved-it's incredibly rewarding work! All the best, Caffeinators!

Vet Tech Cafe - April Bays Episode
Sunday Jul 11, 2021
Sunday Jul 11, 2021
Hello Caffeinators! One of the more emerging areas of our field is cannabis and how these compounds exert effects on the body, and the numerous maladies cannabis-containing compounds may help. There is of course a lot of ground to cover and a long way to go, but the early returns appear promising. Previously, our third episode with Stephen Cital gave us a lot of background info on veterinary cannabis, and we invite you to listen to that episode if you haven't already, or want to brush up on the subject. For this episode, we took a little different direction with our close friend April Bays, CVT, VTS(ECC), as she recently became certified as a Veterinary Cannabis Counselor. We talk at length about that process and certification and how that certification can be utilized in practice. She has also recently started Elevative Veterinary Training Solutions, and we talk about that as well! It's Sunday, it's hot, so let us get you an iced coffee and join us for the discussion!

Vet Tech Cafe - Melody Martinez Episode
Sunday Jun 27, 2021
Sunday Jun 27, 2021
If you asked us the question, "What episodes of the Vet Tech Cafe should I listen to?", this is an episode that would be right up near the top of the list. We always say, "the guests make the episodes", and Melody Martinez certainly made this one. In light of recent events, this episode is very timely. We discuss her work with the Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association, MCVMA, and several of their current and future projects. We also take a look at systemic racism in veterinary medicine and and how that affects all of us. We could've continued this conversation for hours and we sincerely hope Melody will join us again in the future to do just that. Let us pour you some coffee for your commute and join us for the conversation. You'll be glad you did.

Vet Tech Cafe - Erin Spencer Episode
Sunday Jun 13, 2021
Sunday Jun 13, 2021
As the calendar turned from May to June, the initiatives and message turned from Mental Health Awareness Month to Pride Month. Both of these are vitally important to many of our friends and colleagues, and for some, probably both equally so. As such, we wanted to have a discussion about Pride Month as it relates to our professions. We sat down for a cup of tea with Erin Spencer, M. Ed, CVT, VTS(ECC), and Treasurer of PrideVMC. If you're not familiar with PrideVMC, click the link below and check it out. Erin explains why it is a VMC and how that is different than a VMA, what membership looks like, events and collaborations they are working on (SPOILER ALERT we'll be talking about this in our next episode too!), and also allyship. We discuss all the rainbows you're seeing this month and get her thoughts on those as well. We really learned a lot in this one about how to better support our colleagues and we know you will too.
