Vet Tech Cafe - Adrienne Kruzer Episode
Sunday Dec 24, 2023
Sunday Dec 24, 2023
Caffeinators. We know you love the Vet Tech Without Scrubs pages and the content that Adrienne Kruzer puts out. We do too. Adrienne was suggested to us by several previous guests as someone we should talk to. We ran into her at IVECCS and we barely had to ask and she was in to come join us for a discussion. This is a wide-ranging discussion chronicling her career, Vet Tech Without Scrubs, the South Carolina Association of Veterinary Technicians and Association work, Veterinary Emergency Group where she works now and her unique role there, and her transition to that company. Lastly, we talk about veterinary technician education and that pipeline to recruiting staff in our field and so much more. Get your caffeinated beverage of choice and join us for this one!

Vet Tech Cafe - Sieske Valk Episode
Sunday Dec 10, 2023
Sunday Dec 10, 2023
Caffeinators, grab your passports because we're going back across the pond! For this episode, we sit down with Sieske Valk. Sieske reached out to us to talk about her business venture Autumn Animals, which specializes in at home applicative and hospice care. We discuss what hospice and palliative care look like both in the UK and the US, and how as a profession we aren't meeting these needs. Sieske has been an entrepreneur throughout her career in veterinary medicine and we talk about her path from where she was to now as a so-called "end of life doula". This was a fascinating discussion and another wonderful example of people in our field finding a niche that they are passionate about and where need meets opportunity and making it happen. Don't miss this one!

Vet Tech Cafe - Bill Wade Episode
Sunday Nov 26, 2023
Sunday Nov 26, 2023
Hey Caffeinators!
We're back to our regularly scheduled programming! We had some scheduling issues getting this episode recorded as it was supposed to be released on Veteran's Day here in the US. Why Veteran's Day, you ask? Because that's really the focus of this episode. Bill Wade started in the US Air Force in the 1970's, transferred to the US Army in the 1980's and worked as a veterinary technician all those years! He also was in organizational leadership as well, and at two separate times was President of what was then the North American Veterinary Technician Association, now NAVTA, when Canada was still a part of it before they split off to form their own associations. This was a fascinating discussion about what things looked like through a lens very few of us likely have had the opportunity to look through. Grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy this one!

Vet Tech Cafe - Veterinary Viewfinder Collaboration
Sunday Nov 19, 2023
Sunday Nov 19, 2023
Hey Caffeinators, welcome back to another episode of ... the Veterinary Viewfinder?! That's right! If you've been listening to us the last few months, and the Veterinary Viewfinder podcast as well, we've both been dropping nuggets back and forth about how we handle all their complaints and they record in our basement and pick up your tab in the Taproom. It's all in good fun as they have been so kind and helpful to us over the years with advice and honestly just a good model to follow on how to do this. They reached out a while back to see if we wanted to do a mashup and of course we did! We got to know them a lot better, and them for us much the same, and just had a really fun conversation about who we are, what we do, and why we do it. Definitely check this one out-it was a lot of fun to head down to the basement for this episode. We really liked what they've done with the place. Make sure to follow the Veterinary Viewfinder!

Vet Tech Taproom Episode 36
Sunday Nov 12, 2023
Sunday Nov 12, 2023
Welcome to another episode of the Vet Tech Taproom! We unintentionally spent a lot of time talking about vet tech associations. Here's your friendly reminder to get involved! We can only make change in numbers. We also recapped our most recent episodes with Dani and Liz while chatting about the conference experience and previewing some future episodes.

Vet Tech Cafe - Dani Provost Episode 2
Sunday Oct 29, 2023
Sunday Oct 29, 2023
Caffeinators, this is a bit of a heavy topic. By and large, our field has been immune to layoffs. That's not to say they haven't happened in the past, but certainly not by the hundreds or thousands we've seen major companies go through. This episode is focused on layoffs. Dani was a trainer for a corporation, a role that was created specifically for her that she thrived in, and was recently told her position had been eliminated. WHAT?! Could you imagine your path to processing such a thing? That's the focus of this episode-how it happened, how she dealt with it, and how she is coming out the other side even better off. This episode is filled with laughter (perhaps awkward and misplaced), tears, and excitement. Layoffs may never be on the large scale in veterinary medicine as they are with other companies, but with the corporatization of veterinary medicine, they are likely here to stay and are unfortunately becoming part of our reality. Buckle up, Caffeinators, we're about to encounter some turbulence.

Vet Tech Taproom Episode 35
Wednesday Oct 18, 2023
Wednesday Oct 18, 2023
Happy Vet Tech Week, Caffeinators! What does that mean anymore? We delve into a couple of recent nuggets of content we've come across and have a discussion about those, and what we'd like to see. What does Vet Tech Week look like for you? Does your hospital celebrate Vet Tech Week and the days and weeks set aside for the other vital members of our teams, such as CSR's, assistants, bossed, etc? Or is it largely a staff appreciation week? How do you feel about all of it? We'd love to hear from you. Links to what we discussed below!

Vet Tech Cafe - Liz Hughston Episode 5
Sunday Oct 15, 2023
Sunday Oct 15, 2023
Caffeinators, it's mid-October and that means it's an Anniversary here at the Vet Tech Cafe. We're celebrating our 4th complete year-can you believe it? We thought we'd be lucky if we put out 10 episodes, but here we are still going strong because of YOU and all of our amazing guests. It also means we get to chat with Liz Hughston again! This episode is extra special, because we recorded it LIVE with her at IVECCS in Denver last month! You'll hear some different sounds as we were literally in a hallway and a couple people stopped by the table to say "hi" not realizing we were recording! But that just adds to all the fun. Liz recently wrote an article (linked below) and that is where we spent the bulk of our time, just discussing where we're at and where we're headed. It's always great to get the insight from someone like Liz who is SO connected to every facet of the profession and someone with such a great pulse on what is actually going on out there. You don't want to miss this!

Vet Tech Cafe - Tia Gregorio Episode
Sunday Oct 01, 2023
Sunday Oct 01, 2023
Caffeinators, we are in the era of corporatization in veterinary medicine. Maybe you've already experienced working in a hospital that was bought by a corporation, maybe you're going through that process now, or maybe you haven't but chances are you probably will at some point. That is the focus of this episode. Tia Gregorio recently joined us at the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about corporate merging from the support staff side. Tia is a CVT and hospital manager, but also holds an MBA and a doctorate in business. Her doctorate is on medical leadership in the veterinary space-you'll love to hear about her research findings. We talk about what this process looks like from your perspective. What leverage do you hold? What should you expect? What can you ask for? What do you do if you don't like the change? All these and so many more of your questions will be answered!

Vet Tech Cafe - Paige Allen Episode
Sunday Sep 17, 2023
Sunday Sep 17, 2023
Caffeinators, you've heard us before say some of our favorite episodes are when listeners reach out to us with an idea and it turns it to an episode, often because it's something we hadn't thought of before or someone doing something awesome that we didn't know! That last part sums up this episode. Paige Allen, MS, RVT, wrote to us about some of the cool stuff she's doing IN RETIREMENT and we had to talk to her about that! Yes, she RETIRED as a veterinary technician from Purdue University and part of what she did was help to launch the distance learning portion of their vet tech program. How many people do you know that have done that? We talk about that journey, and then we pivot to what she's doing now, which includes co-editing the next version of McCurnin AND working with NAVC and their new HiVE event that will be held in Austin, TX in October which includes 2.5 DAYS of CE for ONLY $25! See link below for more info, and also our discount code to bring the registration cost down to ONLY $15. There's a lot in this one you'll want to hear!
