Caffeinators, this is a bit of a heavy topic. By and large, our field has been immune to layoffs. That's not to say they haven't happened in the past, but certainly not by the hundreds or thousands we've seen major companies go through. This episode is focused on layoffs. Dani was a trainer for a corporation, a role that was created specifically for her that she thrived in, and was recently told her position had been eliminated. WHAT?! Could you imagine your path to processing such a thing? That's the focus of this episode-how it happened, how she dealt with it, and how she is coming out the other side even better off. This episode is filled with laughter (perhaps awkward and misplaced), tears, and excitement. Layoffs may never be on the large scale in veterinary medicine as they are with other companies, but with the corporatization of veterinary medicine, they are likely here to stay and are unfortunately becoming part of our reality. Buckle up, Caffeinators, we're about to encounter some turbulence.

Caffeinators, it's mid-October and that means it's an Anniversary here at the Vet Tech Cafe. We're celebrating our 4th complete year-can you believe it? We thought we'd be lucky if we put out 10 episodes, but here we are still going strong because of YOU and all of our amazing guests. It also means we get to chat with Liz Hughston again! This episode is extra special, because we recorded it LIVE with her at IVECCS in Denver last month! You'll hear some different sounds as we were literally in a hallway and a couple people stopped by the table to say "hi" not realizing we were recording! But that just adds to all the fun. Liz recently wrote an article (linked below) and that is where we spent the bulk of our time, just discussing where we're at and where we're headed. It's always great to get the insight from someone like Liz who is SO connected to every facet of the profession and someone with such a great pulse on what is actually going on out there. Caffeinators, we are in the era of corporatization in veterinary medicine. Maybe you've already experienced working in a hospital that was bought by a corporation, maybe you're going through that process now, or maybe you haven't but chances are you probably will at some point. That is the focus of this episode. Tia Gregorio recently joined us at the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about corporate merging from the support staff side. Tia is a CVT and hospital manager, but also holds an MBA and a doctorate in business. Her doctorate is on medical leadership in the veterinary space-you'll love to hear about her research findings. We talk about what this process looks like from your perspective. What leverage do you hold? What should you expect? What can you ask for? What do you do if you don't like the change? All these and so many more of your questions will be answered!

Remember recently when we shared the Op-Ed Stephen Cital wrote about the position of the AVMA and their unwillingness to expand the scope of practice for veterinary technicians? Do you remember when we shared his recent post about his new business venture-Remedy Veterinary Specialists that he's starting with Dr. Carrie Jurney? Well, good news! They both came by the Vet Tech Cafe recently to talk about all of this. There's some really great info in here about the response to his letter and organizational response to the AVMA from AIMVT and NAVTA, and also from the DVM perspective of Dr. Jurney as well. After navigating that discussion, we pivot to all things Remedy and the vision for the new specialty hospital in the Bay Area of California. It is a gem. You do NOT want to miss this episode.

If you've been listening in, you know we've done several episodes about being a veterinary technician outside of the clinical setting, but staying under the veterinary medicine umbrella-and this is another one of those episodes! We recently met Kate Howard, LVT at the Vet Tech Cafe and talked about her path through vet med, mental health struggles, and how those led her down a different path with Instinct! You may have heard of Instinct before, as it is one of the premiere veterinary software companies around. Did you know they employ veterinary technicians? If your first thought is, "well I can't do that, I'm not good with computers" then listen up! You do not need a computer science degree or knowledge of systems analysis for this role. Grab a cup of coffee and let Kate give it to you straight. You'll be glad she did.

Caffeinators, you are in for a TREAT. Recently, one of our favorite people came by the Vet Tech Cafe for some tea and conversation. Or, should we say collaboration? Listen to the episode and you'll see what I mean, but when Kelly Foltz talks, you best listen. Kelly is credentialed in FOUR states, a VTS(ECC), and currently the Mid-Atlantic Regional Nursing Partner for Blue Pearl, providing support to their hospitals in that region. This was a wide ranging discussion about her work on the AVMA task force for technician utilization, the working group thereafter, her work on the CVTEA and what that looks like, and veterinary education-from veterinary school to veterinary technician school. There was so much ground we covered in this one and there is still SO MUCH we didn't get to that we're going to have to have her back in the not too distant future to talk about her other projects.
