Vet Tech Cafe - Leslie Wereszczak Episode
Sunday Sep 18, 2022
Sunday Sep 18, 2022
Caffeinators, let's continue the DVM-credentialed veterinary technician relationship and education discussions! This episode, Leslie Wereszczak, MS, LVMT, VTS(ECC) came by the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about these dynamics. Leslie has worked in academia at the University of Tennessee for over 30 years and has a unique insight into how the dynamic of the credentialed veterinary technician-DVM student/intern/resident/faculty relationship has evolved during that time as our abilities and knowledge base as a profession have expanded. We also looked into DVM education and the idea that if we were able to instill in them as students who we are and what we can do and our role in a practice, perhaps little by little, we can begin to turn the tide a bit more towards utilization. There's also a brief VNI update as Leslie is instrumental in that process as well. Another not-to-be-missed episode!

Vet Tech Cafe - Meg Harrington Interview
Sunday Sep 04, 2022
Sunday Sep 04, 2022
Caffeinators, if you crave greater utilization in your career, this is THE episode you need to listen to. Meg Harrington, BS, CVT, came by the Vet Tech Cafe recently. You may know her from her Facebook page, The Cattle Vet Tech, and we wanted to talk to her about all things large animal medicine as she is the first applicant for the VTS in production animal medicine through AIMVT. Through that conversation, she discussed her level of utilization and how her state practice act in Arkansas was recently updated help address the veterinarian shortage in her state through CVT utilization. Arkansas is one of the very few states that actually recognizes VTS's in its practice act, and she talked about an initiative that is aiming toward elevating the VTS position to the mid-level practitioner that is so en vogue right now. How did they do it? You'll have to tune in to find out, but we promise you'll be glad you did. And guess what? Through their research, DVM's in her state support it. State VMA's, VMB's, and VTA's-how can we follow in the footsteps of Arkansas?

Vet Tech Taproom Episode 21
Monday Aug 22, 2022
Monday Aug 22, 2022
Welcome back to the Vet Tech Taproom! We were recently in Austin, Texas, for a couple days doing some strategic planning as we approach the start of or 4th year! We took the opportunity to record a live taproom episode together, in which we discuss many of the cool new things we're working on and how we hope to make our next year the best yet. We put a question out to our Patreons about how we could improve their experience and one of the suggestions was to have them be a guest on an episode of the Vet Tech Taproom sometime. So stay tuned-that may be coming, along with cool new merchandise, regular taprooms at the beginning of every month, and some additional really cool stuff.

Vet Tech Cafe - Natalie Herring Episode
Sunday Aug 21, 2022
Sunday Aug 21, 2022
Caffeinators, this one is SPECIAL. This is our 100th episode. Thank you so much for the support! OK, we all know a couple of "love it or hate it" areas in veterinary medicine for most of us. Be it anesthesia or surgery, emergency, dentistry, etc; we all have an area we don't particularly love. Another big one is eyeballs. So it's time to talk all things ophthalmology! Natalie Herring, LVT, VTS(Ophthalmology), recently came by the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about the formation of that VTS academy, her path to working in ophthalmology and a few tips and tricks for doing so, and some of the unique skills required to obtain a VTS in that discipline. We have found through our VTS discussion series that every Academy is unique in several ways, yet follows the same basic blueprint, and we always find it to be a fascinating discussion. Talking all about the path to a VTS in Ophthalmology was no different! Your favorite table in the cafe is available and ready for you so let us get you your caffeinated beverage of choice, sit back, and join us in the conversation about all things ophthalmology!

Vet Tech Taproom Episode 20
Monday Aug 08, 2022
Monday Aug 08, 2022
Caffeinators, welcome to our 20th Taproom episode and our 99th episode overall. You guessed it, that means our next episode will be our 100th! True to our style, we didn't even realize all of this so there is no mention of it at all in either of these two episodes, so we thought we'd mention it here. We want to thank each and every one of our listeners and guests for all of your support over these last THREE years! Without you, there is no Vet Tech Cafe! In this episode we discuss Dave's experience at the recent AVMA conference and how that conference compares to to what we know and love-IVECCS. There's also some additional interesting discussion you'll just have to tune in for to find out! All the best from the Vet Tech Cafe!

Vet Tech Cafe - Tasha Mcnerney Second Episode
Sunday Aug 07, 2022
Sunday Aug 07, 2022
Hey Caffeinators, how are you finding life in vet med these days? That's basically what we asked our guest for this episode, the incomparable Tasha McNerney, BS, CVT, CVPP, VTS(Anesthesia) and just let the conversation go from there! You probably know her as an admin and creator for the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds Facebook page, or perhaps as the creator of the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds podcast (definitely check that out if you haven't already!!), and she was previously a guest on the Vet Tech Cafe in August, 2020. For this episode there was no script, no discussion points we wanted to hit; just an organic discussion of where we're at right now and the exchange of some out-of-the-box ideas. A couple potentially paradigm shifting thoughts from this episode include the idea of a production-based pay scale for veterinary technicians, the abandonment of conference proceedings, and so much more! You'll have to tune in to hear the explanations, rationale, and additional ideas! Join us, won't you? We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Vet Tech Cafe - Heather Carter Episode
Sunday Jul 24, 2022
Sunday Jul 24, 2022
Caffeinators, we've talked ad nauseam on this podcast about burnout, turnover, and the like. Recently, Heather Carter, LVT, VTS(A&A) reached out to us wanting to discuss these issues from another angle, and WOW are we glad she did! Heather also has a Master's degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and we spend this hour discussing how looking at these issues through that lens can lead to tangible change! This is a fascinating discussion on many fronts, specifically the idea of a "stay" interview and how that differs from an annual review, and analyzing what makes teams succeed and how that can be applied in recruiting new employees! Definitely give her recent article in Today's Veterinary Nurse (link below) titled "Turnover: Identifying Causes and Solutions" a read and give this episode a listen. After you do, ask yourself: How can I use industrial and organizational psychology to help improve my practice!

Vet Tech Cafe - Dani Provost Episode
Sunday Jul 10, 2022
Sunday Jul 10, 2022
The focus of this episode is life as a veterinary technician with chronic disease. We had a few guests recently, and a few email requests for an episode with this kind of topic. Dani has been very open about her battle with fibromyalgia, and then post-COVID, which she had this past Christmas, she developed another condition called Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. We talked about the path to finding the diagnoses, those difficulties, and how that has changed her career path. Caffeinators, if you are dealing with chronic health issues or know someone who is, this is the episode for you.

Vet Tech Cafe - Dr. Andy Roark Episode
Sunday Jun 26, 2022
Sunday Jun 26, 2022
Caffeinators-are you ready?! If you're at all active on social media, you're familiar with Dr. Andy Roark. Be it for Uncharted, the Cone of Shame podcast, or just his funny posts, if you've found us, you're probably familiar with him. We don't interview many veterinarians at the Vet Tech Cafe, and there's a reason for that. We want to discuss issues in OUR field with leaders IN our field. There are occasions though when those issues may involve DVM's and that's where this episode stems from. We all know Dr. Andy Roark highly values his entire veterinary team, including his veterinary technicians. In this episode, we found out why that is and why it's important to him to educate his DVM colleagues about it, why technician utilization is so important to him, and how it can really benefit his colleagues, but then we also discuss how to build the trust in that relationship from our side. Because let's be real-just because we are credentialed technicians don't mean DVM's should trust us to do everything on our first day. We certainly don't trust brand-new DVM's in that manner, do we? This is a very wide-ranging episode with loads of golden nuggets sprinkled throughout. We really think you'll enjoy this one!
