Happy New Year, Caffeinators! We hope you had a great holiday season and a safe New Year! We are starting off 2023 with an awesome episode. We've said before some of our favorite episodes are those that are brought to our attention by a listener-episode topics we would've never thought of, let alone know who to talk to about it. That's what this episode is, and it's about disability and accessibility. Sandra Tucker reached out to us to suggest an episode discussing disability in our field and thankfully for us, and you, she was willing to talk about it. Sandra is a veterinary technician student in a distance learning program and discussed her experience with working in a hospital setting in a wheelchair. She discusses some of the stigma that many of us have, that disability = incapability, but she shows us where the error in that thinking lies, and that she can lift the heavy dogs and do most, if not all, of what many in our field would guess she couldn't. We also discuss that with a few minor modifications, most hospitals would be wheelchair accessible, and several other very interesting topics. As Sandra says, let her be the one to tell you what she can and can't do!

Caffeinators, Merry Christmas and a very happy holiday season! As this episode is coming out on Christmas Day, we wanted to give you a special gift. We invited Stephen Cital and Liz Hughston back to the show for a bit of a roundtable discussion! But not to the Vet Tech Cafe, no. Not this time. Caffeinators, you love her memes. You love her podcasts. You love her books. You love that she calls you a unicorn. You love Amy Newfield, and so do we! This woman has a direct line to our funny bone, but more importantly, she is doing some amazing things in our field. SHE is THE unicorn. Just after our first episode with her in 2020, her first book, "Oops, I Became a Manager" came out. Now, in 2022, her second book, "Oops, My Team is Toxic" is available. Caffeinators, you've heard of telemedicine. Have you heard of telementorship? Recently, Becky Giacomini, CVT, VTS(ECC) came by the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about her consulting firm she started called Veterinary Nursing Solutions, LLC, and the launch of their new product coming in 2023 called The Attending. This was a fascinating, and wide-ranging, conversation about the future of veterinary medicine and how we might start to see more and more services like this. Becky was also very forthcoming in her response to Dave's question about mental health and there is some sage advice in her response that applies to so many of us. It is so cool what some of you are doing out there-identifying a need in the veterinary medicine space and inventing a way to fill that need. We love episodes like this where we can discuss these ideas with veterinary technicians that are pushing the boundaries and are being entrepreneurs in our field!

Caffeinators, many of us "end up" in management in some fashion-head technician, supervisor, shift lead, etc, but is that really a path that interests you or is it something you do to fill a need, or perhaps earn an extra shift differential? The reality is, hospital management is AT LEAST a full time job, and arguably more! For this episode, Leslie Boudreau, BASVT, RVTg, CVPM, PHR, PHRca, SPHR, came by the Vet Tech Cafe to talk not just about management, but the path to that. Leslie is an RVTg (she explains the 'g') in California that decided management was her path, put the work in to obtain her CVPM, and additional human resources certifications as well. So we talked to her specifically about that transition from RVT to management, and the RVT-manager relationship and dynamic, and how we can bring more to the table knowing she has been on both sides of the table.
