Vet Tech Cafe - Charlotte Waack Episode
Sunday Nov 29, 2020
Sunday Nov 29, 2020
Happy Sunday, Caffeinators! Charlotte Waack came by the Vet Tech Cafe this past week to talk about VSPN, the legislative process and why it's important for veterinary technicians to be involved, and the veterinary nurse initiative. There are very few people who have done as much for the veterinary technician profession as Charlotte has. Earlier in 2020, a petition was widely circulated in an effort to try to get NAVTA to enter into more discussion, specifically about the title change because most of the other facets of the initiative are largely supported. Then COVID hit, and more important matters took precedent. We believe with 2021 on the horizon, the VNI will come back to the forefront, and we want the Vet Tech Cafe to be a place where these discussions can be had by all sides to help keep our listeners informed. There will be episodes discussing the VNI sprinkled in, and we thought discussing it with Charlotte would be a great place to re-start the conversation!

Vet Tech Cafe - VetFolio Crossover
Sunday Nov 15, 2020
Sunday Nov 15, 2020
Happy Sunday Caffeinators!! We have a bit of a different episode for you this time around! We teamed up with our friends at VetFolio and recorded an episode with Dr. Cassi Fleming, less of an us-interviewing-her style, and more of a roundtable discussion style. She was a veterinary assistant before becoming a veterinarian, so she's pretty in tune to many of the issues that plague our profession, and also has a unique insight as to how those issues affect her career as a veterinarian, and also how some of those issues crossover into her profession as well. So while the format is a bit different, the discussion is not-important ideas being exchanged in an open forum amongst those with a vested interest. We really think you'll enjoy this one.
Make sure to check out our IG page this week for some CE giveaways!

Vet Tech Cafe - Molly Cripe-Birt Episode
Sunday Nov 01, 2020
Sunday Nov 01, 2020
For many veterinary technicians, large animal medicine is something we learn in school, study for the VTNE or other credentialing exam, and then forget about because we practice small animal medicine. But we're all still veterinary technicians who can align to fight our battles on a unified front, as most are similar, though a few are unique. In this episode, we interview Molly Cripe-Birt who is a surgical technologist at the large animal hospital at Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine. She's the President of the Academy of Equine Veterinary Nursing, and we talk about many of these challenges and how to bridge the gap between small and large animal technicians in the national conversation. We found this to be very insightful discussion, and we strongly believe our Caffeinators will enjoy it as much as we did! Check out the link below if you're interested in some great equine information and certification info!

Vet Tech Cafe - Liz Hughston Episode #2
Sunday Oct 18, 2020
Sunday Oct 18, 2020
Welcome to Year 2 of the Vet Tech Cafe! We're starting this year off the same way we started off Year 1-with Liz Hughston! Liz is the President of the NVPU- the National Veterinary Professionals Union, and we're spending the bulk of this episode talking about organization of veterinary professionals. If you've listened to our previous episodes, you know we have a recorded disclaimer that our opinions or those of our guests don't represent any entity other than ourselves, and we felt it important to re-iterate that here for this episode-you'll understand why when you give it a listen. As with all of our episodes, we ask you to open your heart and your mind to new thoughts and ideas, and throw away your pre-conceived notions about our topics of discussions. Unionization can be a bit of a sensitive topic, and it doesn't have to be. We hope you'll come away from this episode with a fresh perspective regarding organization and why it might be important. This one is a bit longer than usual, so after you give it a listen we'd love to hear your thoughts!

BONUS EPISODE: VET TECH WEEK Collaboration
Sunday Oct 11, 2020
Sunday Oct 11, 2020
Hello Caffeinators!! We got together recently with all of our podcasting friends to bring you another super-episode! We chatted with Lewis Kerkham and Rob Anderson from the Two Vets Talk Pets podcast, Cat Robinson from Radio Vet Nurse, Tasha McNerny from the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds podcast, and lastly, our hosts, Jordan Porter and Yvonne Brandenburg from the Internal Medicine for Vet Techs podcast. We talked a lot about Vet Tech Week here in the US, and what Vet Nurses day (10/9) looks like down in Australia, and different ideas people have to celebrate. It's also really cool to hear the guys DVM perspective from the Two Vets Talk Pets podcast about how they view technicians. We also, circle back through COVID-19 as that was what originally brought us together 6 months ago. We definitely recommend you check out their podcasts as well-they're all fantastic!

Vet Tech Cafe - Brandy Helewa Episode
Sunday Oct 04, 2020
Sunday Oct 04, 2020
This is a big one for us. This episode culminates our first year of the Vet Tech Cafe Podcast. We bookended our first year with two guests who are very important people in both our personal and professional lives. Our first guest was Liz Hughston, and we're ending Year 1 with Brandy Helewa. As a team, they hosted a study group in preparation for the VTS(ECC) in 2013 where the four of us met. They helped both of us, and dozens more that year and in subsequent years, prepare for that exam. To say that all of us have a little bit of Biz in us is an understatement. Brandy has moved on to another passion of hers-books and literature, and in this episode we talk about what it looked like for her to walk away from veterinary medicine. It's a decision many of us have grappled with, and we thought some might benefit from hearing her perspective. She discusses the differences in lifestyle, happiness, and an unexpected burden of leaving veterinary medicine behind-guilt. This is our first October episode, and you'll understand why that matters to us and to Brandy when you listen! You do not want to miss this one! Thank you to all of our guests and listeners for making our first year of the Vet Tech Cafe Podcast what it has become. We absolutely love putting this together and we're so excited to see what our second year brings!

Vet Tech Cafe - Theresa Cosper Episode (Re-Release)
Monday Sep 21, 2020
Monday Sep 21, 2020
We accidentally released this episode without adding in our standard intro and outro that so many of you have told us you enjoy. The content is all the same, we just added the intro and outro.
Are you ready to feel uncomfortable? Are you ready to push your boundaries a bit? Are you ready to grow as a human? If not, keep scrolling. Theresa Cosper has been an RVT for 8 years and is currently at an academic institution where she manages a teaching lab for veterinary students. But we're not talking about any of that in this episode. This episode is The Vet Tech Cafe continuing its mission to discuss the issues that face our profession with those who live and experience those issues firsthand, and talk about ways to inspire change. This was a very real, and very difficult, episode for us to record and there is some very real and difficult language in here. Racism is as real in veterinary medicine as it is everywhere else. We invite you to open your heart and join the discussion.
